Welcome to the latest SEP sesam documentation version 5.2.0 Artemis. For previous documentation version(s), check documentation archive.

Overview

The Novell corporate brand has been acquired by Micro Focus, which was in turn acquired by OpenText. SEP sesam documentation update (such as names and screenshots) to reflect these changes is being done in a phased manner, therefore OpenText GroupWise may still appear under the name Micro Focus GroupWise.

SEP sesam enables you to restore all or only selected parts of your GroupWise system – a domain, a mailbox or a single message. Before you begin, check that all the prerequisites are met.

Restore options

The SEP sesam OpenText Client supports path relocation for restored data. The following options are available after restoring GroupWise to the restore area:

  • restore single objects from user mailbox (restore post office to the restore area, user via Groupwise Windows client)
  • restore the complete mailbox (restore post office to restore area, administrative recovery by admin via ConsoleOne/AdminConsole)
  • restore domains (restore the domain to a temporary folder and use of the required files)
  • restore libraries (restore the library directories or databases from post office (for libraries that have their storage in the post office), restore the external storage structure into a temporary directory and use the required files)

Prerequisites

Before performing OpenText GroupWise restore, check the following prerequisites:

  • For a successful restore, all preparation steps must be performed properly. For details, see OpenText GroupWise Backup.
  • Depending on what you want to restore, make sure you have the required restore permissions and access rights. For details, see User Roles and Permissions.
  • Make sure that there is sufficient free space on the target system to which you are restoring your data. By default, the target data store for the restore is the same data store that was used for the backup.

Restoring OpenText GroupWise data

Restore GroupWise data as a normal file restore into the restore area you have defined in your GroupWise system. Note that you can restore missing objects via the GroupWise Windows client or as an administrator via ConsoleOne. For details, refer to the relevant version of the relevant OpenText GroupWise documentation.

To perform restore in SEP sesam, you can use the web-based Restore Assistant. From v. ≥ 5.2.0 Artemis the restore procedure in the GUI is no longer available and Restore Assistant is the only method for restoring your data.

You can access the Restore Assistant in one of the following ways:

  • via the GUI: by clicking the Restore Assistant icon in the toolbar or from Activities -> Restore Assistant
  • from SEP sesam Web UI: left menu -> Restore Assistant
  • or by entering the following address in the browser bar: http://[sesamserver]:11401/sep/ui/restore/.
Note
  • If you cannot access the web Restore Assistant, check that you have been given the appropriate permissions for online restore.
  • The operations and options available after logging in may differ depending on the user type. Other Web UI display restrictions may depend on the custom roles with specific permissions and the UI mode.

For details, see About Authentication and Authorization and User Roles and Permissions.

Steps

The following steps are performed in simple UI mode. They cover the most common restore cases and are the recommended method for performing a restore. For more experienced users, some additional restore options are available in advanced restore mode.

Note
This procedure provides specific instructions for restoring a Groupwise system. For general description of the restore procedure in Restore Assistant, refer to Standard Restore Procedure.
  1. Open Restore Assistant in the browser.
  2. In the Start window, select OpenText GroupWise and click Next.
  3. Screenshots

  4. In the Client window, select your client and click Next.
  5. Screenshots

  6. In the Task window, select your backup task from the Task selection. A backup task defines the source data that was backed up by the client.
  7. Tip
You can search for a file or directory by entering your search term in the Search for files or directories in all backups field.

Under Backup selection, select the exact backup version you want to restore. You can use the calendar function in the upper right corner to set a date range for the displayed backups. Click Next.

  8. In the Files window, select your GroupWise post office or domain folder. Click Next.
  9. Screenshots

  10. Select the options in the Target window:
    1. Select the target client for the restore. Note that only clients with OS OES-Linux can be selected as the target for GroupWise restore.
    2. You can enter or browse the path to the target GroupWise restore area. You must also configure Relocation. Click the Relocation button and set the following:
      Restore to target node <name>
Files from this path: Select the backup source folder from the drop-down list on the left.
will be restored directly to the following path: Select or browse for the destination folder of the restore area from the drop-down list on the right.
      Click Save selection.
    3. Screenshots

    4. Under the Execution options, you can set additional restore options:
    5. Do not overwrite existing items (selected by default): Files are only restored if they do not already exist on the target system.
Overwrite existing items: If the data exists on the target server, it is replaced with the restored version.
    6. Decide how you want to restore your data (keep the original tree structure or flat):
    7. Keep original tree structure: When restoring to the original location, the Keep original tree structure option is selected by default. The directory structure of the restored files is the same as the original directory structure of the backed up data.
Restore all items flat in the selected target directory: The backup is simply restored to a file without recreating the directory structure.
      Click Next.
  11. In the Finish window, review the summary of your restore task (restore type (based on task type, client, backup level, restore options) and click Start restore.

Monitoring restore

You can monitor the restore progress using the Web UI (Monitoring -> Restores) or view the status in the GUI (Main Selection -> Job State -> Restores). The restore overview provides detailed information on the last run of restore jobs, including task name, status (successful, error, in queue...), start and stop time of the last backup, data size, throughput, etc. For details, see SEP sesam Web UI.
