5 1 0:Web Exchange Restore

From SEPsesam

Welcome to the latest SEP sesam documentation version 5.1.0 Apollon. For previous documentation version(s), check documentation archive.

Overview

As of SEP sesam v. 5.0.0 Jaglion, it is possible to restore a single Exchange mailbox database using SEP sesam Exchange Recovery Pro via the web interface Restore Assistant if you have been granted the appropriate permissions. For details on the requirements for using the web interface, see Restore Assistant.

Note that individual emails, folders, calendars, etc. can only be restored via the GUI restore wizard.

Exchange Recovery Pro is only supported on Windows systems and must be installed on the system serving as SEP sesam Server or SEP sesam RDS.

Prerequisites

Before attempting to recover Exchange, all preparation steps have to be performed properly, including configuration and backup. For details, see Exchange Documentation.

Then ensure that the following conditions are met:

  • A SEP sesam data store (Path, SEP sesam Si3 deduplication store, HPE StoreOnce, etc.) is required for immediate recovery of individual items.
  • If the backups are encrypted, compressed, or stored on tape or a Linux data store, a manual restore is required on a Windows x64 system (with installed SEP sesam Client, Exchange Recovery Pro for Exchange, Microsoft Outlook (32-bit, 2007/2010/2013/2016)). An additional Outlook license is not required and does not need to be activated.
  • Ensure that there is sufficient free space on the Windows x64 system used to recover the Exchange database and the corresponding transaction log files.
  • SEP sesam Exchange Recovery Pro can only be run by users with administrative privileges and in administrative mode.

There are also some limitations for the recovery of Exchange mailbox databases. For details, see Exchange Limitations.

Accessing the Restore Assistant

You can access the Restore Assisstant in one of the following ways:

  • via the GUI: by clicking the Restore Assistant icon in the toolbar or from Activities -> Restore Assistant
  • from SEP sesam Web UI: left menu -> Restore Assistant
  • or by entering the following address in the browser bar: http://[sesamserver]:11401/sep/ui/restore/.
Note
  • If you cannot access the web Restore Assistant, check if you have received the appropriate permissions for online restore. For details, see About Authentication and Authorization.
  • The operations and options available after logging in may differ depending on the user type. Other Web UI display restrictions may depend on the custom roles with specific permissions and the UI mode.
For details, see User Roles and Permissions.

Restoring a single Exchange mailbox database

In the web Restore Assistant, you can currently only restore a single Exchange mailbox database using SEP sesam Exchange Recovery Pro. If you want to restore individual emails, calendars, journals, etc., you have to follow the Exchange restore procedure in the SEP sesam GUI.

You can restore the Exchange mailbox using the Restore Assistant in simple or advanced restore mode. However, when restoring Exchange, it does not matter which UI mode is used as the options for both modes are identical.

Note
If a backup is only available on tape media and you want to use Exchange Recovery Pro, you must first restore the target saveset to a file system (as described in the section Manual restore from tape or Linux SEP sesam Server) or migrate the saveset from tape to a SEP sesam data store.
  1. Open the Restore Assistant in the browser.
  2. In the Start window, select Microsoft Exchange. Click Next.

  3. In the Client window, select your MS Exchange client.

  4. In the Task window, under the Task selection, select your backup task. A backup task defines the source data backed up by the client.
  5. Then, under the Backup selection, select the exact backup version you want to restore. You can use the calendar function in the upper right corner to set a date range for the displayed backups. Click Next.
    Tip
You can search for a file or directory by entering your search term in the Search for files or directories in all backups field.

  6. In the Exchange DB window, select a single mailbox database and click Next.

  7. In the Exchange Recovery Pro window, click the Mount this backup in filesystem button.

  8. Select the SEP sesam Server or RDS to which you want to mount the backup. You can also specify an alternate mount path and/or advanced mount options. Then click the Mount this backup in filesystem button again. A new window appears showing the progress of the mount process.

  9. A mount action is triggered and the Exchange Recovery Pro shortcut has been saved to your SEP sesam Server desktop. In the Exchange Recovery Pro window, do not click the Finish button until the restore is complete. Clicking Finish will close the Exchange Recovery Pro, the saveset will be unmounted and your restore session will be closed.

  10. Leave the Restore Assistant and double-click the Exchange Recovery Pro (RPEX) shortcut on your desktop. SEP sesam Exchange Recovery Pro opens and a Data Wizard appears.

  11. Select the source type and specify the location, then click Finish. The database is displayed in the Source window.
  12. Search the Exchange mailbox database you want to restore. You can browse the databases or click the magnifying glass icon to open the Find dialog.

  13. Now click the third icon from the left to select the target Exchange server. The Target Selection opens.

  14. Select the target and enter the email address of the mailbox user whose mailbox you want to restore.
  15. Then enter the server name or select it from the drop-down list and click Next.
  16. A security certificate warning pops up. Click Yes to continue and enter the mailbox user name and its password to open the target. The live target Exchange is opened below in the Target window.
  17. In the Source window, select the items you want to restore and drag & drop them to the target destination. Note that you can create a new folder in the target destination, e.g., Restore, to give the mailbox user quick access to the restored items.

  18. Close SEP sesam Recovery Pro and go to SEP sesam Restore Assistant (Exchange Recovery Pro window). If you want to restore additional mailbox database, click Back. Then select a new mailbox and repeat the procedure. Otherwise, click Finish to unmount the saveset and close your restore session.

Monitoring restore

You can view the status of your restore jobs in the Restore Assistant by clicking the monitoring icon (second icon in the upper right corner), via SEP sesam Web UI (Monitoring -> Restores), or view the status in the GUI (Main Selection -> Job State -> Restores). The restore overview provides detailed information on the last run of restore jobs, including task name, status (successful, error, in queue...), start and stop time of the last backup, data size, throughput, etc. For details, see Monitoring in the Web UI or Restores by State in the GUI.
