5 2 0:Managing Clients

Welcome to the latest SEP sesam documentation version 5.2.0 Artemis. For previous documentation version(s), check documentation archive.

Overview

SEP sesam enables you to effectively monitor and manage your backup environment. Through the Web UI, you can overview the status of all clients and their backup load, allowing you to keep track of jobs and actions performed on each client. This helps to identify any issues in the backup process and take proactive steps to prevent data loss or disruptions.

Clients can be managed either individually or centrally in one location. You can add new clients, modify existing ones, check their access and update statuses, update client versions, reset version information, or delete clients as needed.

Viewing and monitoring clients

In the Web UI, the Client State dashboard widget provides an overview of all SEP sesam clients, along with the number of clients grouped by actions that require attention. It opens the Infrastructure -> Clients view, with filters applied based on the selected action.

The Clients view allows quick access to a list of clients that may require your attention. You can use filters to refine the displayed entries, helping you focus on specific areas of interest.

The monitoring tools enable you to manage, monitor, and control SEP sesam clients, helping you identify potential issues and key areas for optimizing your backup environment. System Events (available in Advanced view) provide insights into system-related events, including information on processes, daemons, and other critical system elements.

Reports are designed to identify issues within your backup environment, allowing for proactive measures to prevent potential data loss or operational disruptions. Additionally, SEP sesam logs offer valuable insights for troubleshooting and reviewing client performance. Client Backup Summary report provides details on client backup tasks, media pools, and data size, with filters available for clients or locations.

Configuring clients

When configuring a new client in SEP sesam, you first perform initial configuration, where general settings are defined, and the platform type is selected (for example, Linux or Windows). Once a client has been added, further tabs with additional settings become available, such as backup options, scheduling, and permissions.

To manage clients, the SEP Sesam GUI provides several options that can be applied to individual clients or groups of clients. Since version 5.2.0 Artemis, the Web UI also includes a set of actions for client management.

Adding new clients

You can add a computer or system as a client on the SEP sesam Server either before or after installing the SEP sesam Client package on that system. Once a client has been added, additional tabs with advanced settings become available, allowing you to configure backup options, scheduling, and SEP sesam permissions.

For the procedure and detailed descriptions of the options, see Adding a New Client.

In case you have a hypervisor with multiple VMs that require backup, you do not need to manually add and configure each VM as a client. For hypervisors, SEP sesam can automatically discover and add virtual machines (VMs) as clients, simplifying the process and saving time. For more details, see Automatic generation of VM clients.

Configuring permissions for clients

There are two different ways to manage permissions for clients in SEP sesam:

  • Managing credential sets – credential sets define network access permissions for clients, allowing SEP sesam Server to authenticate and connect to them. These credentials are configured in the OS Access tab (where available). For more details, see Managing Credential Sets.
Tip
By assigning credentials to a specific location, you can avoid manually configuring permissions for each individual client. Instead, all clients within that location will inherit the same access controls, making it easier to manage security in large or distributed environments.
  • Managing SEP sesam permissions (ACLs) – Access Control Lists (ACLs) define the actions that user groups or specific users can perform on a client, such as read and/or write operations. ACL permissions are managed in the Permissions tab (where available). For more details, see Using Access Control Lists.

Checking client status

SEP sesam allows you to perform two types of status checks on your clients:

  • Access State check: This check tests the connectivity between the SEP sesam server and the client. The server verifies if the client is accessible and properly responds to requests, ensuring there are no network issues or connectivity problems that could impact backup operations.
  • Update State check: This check is used to verify the current version of the installed SEP sesam client. The SEP sesam Server compares the client's version to the list of available updates by checking the SEP sesam repository to determine if any updates are available for the client. The index.txt file contains a list of all available packages and is usually downloaded from the SEP Download Center.

Additionally, you have the option to manually reset a client’s version information. This operation deletes the stored version details from the SEP sesam database. The next time an update state is checked (either manually or automatically), the information is refreshed, ensuring that the latest version information is displayed.

Updating clients

SEP sesam GUI enables you to centrally manage and update clients. You can check for available updates for client systems and perform bulk updates across an entire location. For example, clients within the same location can be updated all at once, or updates can be applied only to specific operating systems, such as Linux or Windows.

Additionally, SEP sesam offers flexibility in managing individual clients. A specific client can be excluded from an update if it requires special handling.

For more information, see Updating Clients.

Modifying a client

To modify an existing client, right-click it and then click on Properties. Make the changes as required. Click OK to save the changes and close the Client Properties window. Note that you can also click Apply to save the changes and continue editing the client.

To move a client to a different location, you have to modify the client. Right-click the client you want to move and then click on Properties. In the Location drop-down list select a different location, and then click OK to move the client and close the Client Properties window. For more details, see Adding a New Client.

Deleting a client

Before deleting a client, ensure that it is no longer in use. A client can only be deleted if it has no existing dependencies linked to other objects in the system. When you select a client for deletion, a list of its dependencies is be displayed. It is important to resolve these dependencies before proceeding. Removing them ensures the client can be safely deleted without disrupting other configurations or backup operations.

The Force deletion option allows you to delete the client even if there are dependencies. However, use this option with caution, as it may impact related backup jobs or other objects associated with the client.

The Delete all related data option deletes savesets, meta files, and database entries. Savesets stored on tape will remain until the media can be overwritten. Note that there is no check for EOL status or write protection for these savesets.
