Docs latest icon.png Welcome to the latest SEP sesam documentation version 4.4.3. For previous documentation version(s), check Documentation archive.

Overview

SEP sesam now allows you to handily check the state of SEP sesam Servers by using its web dashboard. SEP sesam Dashboard is an easy-to-use online monitoring tool that constantly tracks SEP sesam operations and their state and provides key metrics of your backup environment.

You simply need to access a web dashboard to check if all your backups and restores have been completed successfully and review other various useful information, such as daily, weekly, monthly or custom statistics on SEP sesam events, on total size of backed up and restored data and on data store utilization. You are able to filter the reports by events, clients, tasks and state; check backups and restores per client or application over time; get an overview of up-coming events and data store utilization.

You can export the report data into CSV (can be opened in Excel), JPG and PNG formats, which can be used for further analysis purpose.

All information provided by SEP sesam centralized online dashboard is currently read-only, but it will soon be possible to also administer your servers from dashboard.

Dashboard access

You can access the dashboard by typing the following information in the browser address bar:
http://[servername]:11401/sep/ui
or
https://[servername]:11401/sep/ui.

Information sign.png Note
If you cannot access the dashboard, check the authentication settings. For details, see Authentication.

Example: On the SEP sesam Server the following 'localhost' link will open the SEP sesam Dashboard: http://localhost:11401/sep/ui

As of SEP sesam v. 4.4.3.33, the dashboard is also available in the GUI from Main Selection -> Monitoring -> Dashboard, or by clicking dashboard icon in the menu bar.

Dashboard overview 4.4.3.45.jpg

SEP sesam Server details

The name of the SEP sesam Server is displayed in the upper left corner. Clicking its name provides information on GUI Server version, GUI Server Git ID, kernel version, DB type, encoding type, build host, as well as installation date and server's time zone. Additionally, all Java-related information and server's operating system are shown. If authentication has not been enabled on the server, a message is displayed notifying that no authentication is required at login.
Dashboard server details.png

Home, restore assistant, notifications, help & language

In the upper right corner, the dashboard home, restore assistant, notifications, help and language menus are available. This menu is always present and enables you to return to your dashboard home page any time, to restore save sets online, to review notifications, access online help, and choose or change the display language.
Upper right menu.jpg

Restore Assistant
As of v. 4.4.3. Tigon v.2, it is possible to restore save sets online with the Self-Service Restore Assistant. It gives you ability to restore and recover files online in a few simple steps. You can connect to restore assistant only if you have been granted appropriate permissions. For details, see Self-Service Restore Assistant.
Dashboard restore assistant Grolar.jpg

Notifications
SEP sesam Server sends different types of messages – notifications. They are intended to notify a user of important events and announcements, such as information on latest patches, license violations, non-configured interfaces, as well as announcements of a new release or alerts about issues and errors that are sent via RSS feeds.
Dashboard notifications.jpg

A notification's status can be open or acknowledged. Notification remains open until being acknowledged through the notification center in the GUI. This means that you can check all messages displayed in the dashboard, but you cannot change their state. For this, you have to use SEP sesam GUI -> menu bar -> Window -> Show notification center. For details, see Notification center.
Dashboard notifications-details.jpg

Help
Shortcuts to different types of user assistance are provided from the Help menu:
  • Overview provides a description of all dashboard reports and functions.
  • Sesam API Documentation is available to provide access to the SEP sesam functions and services as a third-party software.
  • SEP sesam wiki (you are currently using it) is a set of wiki topics documenting SEP sesam concepts, procedures and tasks.
  • SEP sesam forum is a place where you can find helpful solutions and workarounds from the SEP sesam users.
  • Video tutorials provide step-by-step tutorials and screencasts covering a wide range of topics, from basic configuration to setting up backup and recovery in specific environments.

Time range selector

Time range selector allows you to specify the time span of the report. By selecting start and enddates from the calendar you can specify a custom date range. You are able to view reports for any time period, including days, weeks, months, and years. Your dashboard is updated every time you log in and reloads data every few seconds. It shows the reports for the last 3 days by default.

Note that the days are always defined by sesam backup day that depends on the newday event.

Dashboard elements

The dashboard contains the following reports:

Last backup state

This report shows the last run of each backup task that is configured on the server. The backup jobs are displayed in a table format with each row representing a specific backup task and its information: last run status, backup event level, start time of the last backup, start time of the last successful run, start time of the last full backup, backup data size and client.

Clicking the arrow next to the backup task name displays task-related history: the status of all previous jobs for the selected task (in queue, active, successful, warning, cancelled, error), backup level (C,F,D,I), start and end time, and data size. You can filter the results by tasks, by clients, by states and by backup (event) levels. Filtering by tasks enables you to check selected backups with configured tasks or backups without configured tasks. You can also check which tasks have never been backed up by selecting tasks without backups.

You can export the last backup state report as CSV file by clicking the export as button. Dashboard last bck state 4.4.3.jpg

Current data store utilization

The data store current utilization overview provides information on configured path and Si3 data stores and their actual usage in the form of a bar graph. It helps identify the amount of storage that is in use, the total capacity and the configured size of data store.

The graph shows the state of HWM and LWM, and the amount of filled (used) space in data store. For the Si3 deduplication store, it shows the deduplication rate, the actual used space in GB (filled) and the size of stored data (stored). If the size of actual used (filled) space is larger than the configured capacity on data store (overflow of data store size), the status bar color is changed to red.

Dashboard overview data store.jpg

To check utilization for each individual data store, click the link Show utilization by data store. A report with utilization for each individual data store is displayed. The graph provides information on when the data store capacity, HWM and LWM values have changed, when (if) the data store ran out of space and if the purge was able to fix this problem. If the filled (blue) line is above the capacity (orange) line, you have to either change the EOL of some save sets in the data store and execute a purge, or you have to adjust the capacity. For details, see Data Store.

  • Use the time sliders (round icons on each side of the graph) to shorten (or lengthen) the time range of your timeline.
  • Use the legend buttons below the graph – filled, LWM, HWM, capacity to exclude the selected criteria to be displayed in a graph.
  • If you want to check the details only for a specific data store, enter its name in the Search field.
