Microsoft Exchange backup and restore with SEP sesam Exchange Recovery Pro

Prerequisites

  • For version 4.4.1.x or in case the backups are encrypted, stored on tape or on Linux datastore, a manual restore to a prepared Windows x64 system (SEP sesam Client, Exchange Recovery Pro for Exchange, Microsoft Outlook "32 Bit" (2007, 2010, 2013)) is required.
  • Ensure that there is enough free space on the Windows x64 system, which will be used to recover the Exchange database and all associated transaction log files as a file.

Installing SEP sesam components for the Exchange environment

  • Install the latest SEP sesam client/RDS version on all Microsoft Exchange nodes with default properties.
  • Repeat the installation procedure for Database Availability Groups (DAGs) environments.

Configuring SEP sesam Exchange Recovery Pro

Ensure that Microsoft Outlook 32-bit (2007, 2010, 2013) with a valid license and the SEP sesam Exchange Recovery Pro extension are installed on the system. Special Outlook configuration is not required.

Installing SEP sesam Exchange Recovery Pro package

  1. Download SEP sesam Exchange Recovery Pro from SEP sesam Exchange download.
  2. Extract the files to a directory of your choice. Then double-click the setup.exe and follow the instructions. If any required components are missing, you will be prompted to install them.

Installing the license file for Exchange Recovery Pro

  1. You need a special license file for SEP sesam Exchange Recovery Pro feature. Licenses are made available immediately once your purchase/renewal is completed.
  2. Attention

The license counts all mailboxes (user mailboxes and archive mailboxes) of all Exchange databases. If you ordered a license with the wrong amount of mailboxes, the restore will not work!

  3. Go to Start -> All Programs -> SEP sesam Recovery Pro and open SEP sesam Recovery Pro. A message License file not installed appears.
  4. Click the button License info and import the license.ini file.

Restoring Exchange – Part 1

Steps

  1. From the SEP sesam GUI menu bar, select Activities -> Restore. The New restore task window appears.
  2. Select the Exchange save set you want to restore. You can search save sets by task name or by filename or path.
    • When searching by task name, use a drop-down list of available tasks and select the one you want to restore from. This option is selected by default.
    • If you want to search by filename/path, select the option Filename or path in save set and enter your search expression in the search pattern field.
  3. Under the Saved in period drop-down lists, specify the time frame you want to search. Click Next.
  4. The search results are displayed. From the list of the save sets matching your query, click the desired version to select it. If the option Hide migrated is checked under the list, the migrated save sets are not displayed. Do not select any special options (such as 'Mount saveset'). Click Next.

Ensure that there is enough free space available in the selected directory for the restore. Click Start to start a restore.

  6. Recover to a live Exchange server/mailbox.
If there is a special user with administrative access to all mailboxes, you can select the method Microsoft Exchange Server (All mailboxes) as a target and use the credentials of the special user to authenticate. Connection Modes

  • Outlook Anywhere: In Microsoft Exchange Server, the Outlook Anywhere feature (also known as RPC over HTTP) allows clients to connect using HTTP. This enables users outside of an organization's network to connect to the Microsoft Exchange Server without using VPN. Outlook Anywhere is supported by Microsoft Outlook 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013 using Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013. SEP sesam Recovery Pro supports Outlook Anywhere connection.
    Note:
    • Microsoft Outlook 2003 is not supported for Microsoft Exchange Server 2013.
    • With Microsoft Exchange Server 2013, direct MAPI access to the Microsoft Exchange Server is no longer supported, so Outlook Anywhere is required to connect to the server.
  • Autodiscover: It simplifies the process of connecting to a Microsoft Exchange Server by returning the connection settings as if they were requested by a client application. Clients, such as Microsoft Outlook, can retrieve the connection settings by issuing a request to autodiscover with the user's SMTP email address. These settings are then used to configure the user profile and connect. Autodiscover is supported by Microsoft Outlook 2007, 2010 and 2013, using Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, 2010 and 2013.
