Information sign.png SEP AG has discontinued support for SEP sesam version 4.4.3 Tigon (V1 and V2). Instructions are still available for these SEP sesam products, however, SEP AG accepts no responsibility or liability for any errors or inaccuracies in the instructions or for the incorrect operation of obsolete SEP sesam software. It is strongly recommended that you update your SEP sesam software to the latest version.

Overview

The restore of virtual machines (VMs) is quite similar to a regular file system restore. There are two ways to restore your KVM/QEMU virtual machines (VMs) in SEP sesam: by using GUI restore wizard (described below) or through the web interface Restore Assistant (as of ≥ 4.4.3 Beefalo V2). Even though most of the options are the same in both restore interfaces, the web Restore Assistant interface is designed to be more intuitive and offers additional advanced options. However, it cannot be used for scheduling restore or single file restore as these are only supported in the GUI mode. For details, see Restore Assistant.

In the GUI, the restore is triggered from the Menu bar -> Activities -> Restore. The restore wizard guides you through the process of restoring your data. For step-by-step procedure, see Standard Restore Procedure.

To successfully restore a KVM/QEMU backup, all preparation steps must be performed properly. For details, see KVM/QEMU Backup.

SEP sesam KVM/QEMU integration advantages

  • Restore of complete virtual machines and configuration.
  • Restore of virtual machine configuration.
  • Restore into new virtual machine instances.
  • Single file restore in SEP sesam ≥ 4.4.3 Beefalo V2.

Restore options

The following options are available when restoring KVM/QEMU:

  • Select an alternative location to restore your data:
    • Restore a KVM/QEMU to the original or a different location with the same or a different name using relocation.
  • Perform a complete restore, simple path restore or single file restore (in ≥ Beefalo V2) of your selected KVM/QEMU data directly to a directory on any system.
  • Schedule a restore task.

Prerequisites

Before you perform KVM/QEMU restore, check the following prerequisites:

  • Depending on what you want to restore, make sure that you have the proper restore permissions and access rights.
  • Make sure that there is sufficient free space on the target system to which you are restoring your data.

Restoring a KVM/QEMU virtual machine

For details on how to configure a restore task and a description of different restore options, see Standard Restore Procedure. Only KVM/QEMU-specific steps and options are described in this section.

  1. From the SEP sesam GUI menu bar, select Activities -> Restore. The New Restore Task window opens.
  2. Select the saveset you want to restore. You can search savesets by task name or by filename or path.
    • When searching by task name, use the drop-down list of available tasks and select the one you want to restore from. This option is selected by default.
    • If searching by filename/path, select the option Filename or path in saveset and enter your search expression in the search pattern field.
  3. Under the Saved in period drop-down lists, specify the time frame for which you want to conduct the search. Click Next.
  4. The search results are displayed. From the list of savesets matching your query, select the desired version by clicking on it, then select other relevant restore options (e.g., As path restore). Click Next.
  5. KVM restore select task Beefalo V2.jpg
  6. Review your restore task configuration and set additional options, if required.
  7. Details of the selected saveset are displayed at the top and at the bottom (Optional data source selection) of the window. The name of the restore task is automatically generated in the Restore task name field. You can edit the name and insert a comment below.
    Target data
You can restore the KVM/QEMU VM to the original VM or under a new VM name. If you want to restore VM under a different name, select the option Restore with new VM name and enter a new VM name or use the Browser button. If you want to restore the VM to a different location, under the Change VM target selection, select another Target node from the drop-down list.
    VM restore options
Select one of the following from the drop-down list:
    • Do not overwrite existing items (default): VM will be restored only if it does not exist on the target server.
    • Overwrite existing items: If the VM exists on the target server, it will be replaced by its restored version.
    • Create a new version Will restore VM under a new name.
    • You can also select whether you want your virtual machine to start automatically after restore by selecting Start virtual machine after restore/Do not start virtual machine after restore (selected by default).
    • Click the Expert Options button if you want to specify additional restore settings, e.g., modify the log level, define the pre/post script for restore, etc. For details, see the Restore wizard.
    • Information sign.png Note
As of v. 4.4.3. Beefalo, the Expert Options button for specifying advanced restore options is only available in the Expert UI mode. It is not available for users that run the GUI in Basic or Advanced mode. In the latter case, if you want to access the Expert Options you first have to change the Basic/Advanced UI mode to Expert, as described in Selecting UI mode.

  8. In the final step of the restore wizard, you can review all the settings of your restore task. You can also edit the settings by using Change Selection button. If you want to start your restore immediately, click Start. If you want to save the restore task, click Save.
Information sign.png Note
A restore task can be scheduled like any other task. If you want to add a restore task to the schedule, see Scheduling Restore.

Restoring single files (Expert mode only)

With 4.4.3 Beefalo V2, SEP sesam introduces single file restore – item-level restore of files, folders, and volumes from the FULL or COPY backup of KVM/QEMU virtual machine by mounting a virtual disk on the device server and browsing the content of a virtual disk file.

SEP Tip.png Tip
If you prefer to watch a video rather than to read a step-by-step guide, you can learn all the steps of the restore procedure by watching Backup of KVM on SEP sesam YouTube channel.

Before starting a restore, check the supported file systems and restrictions.

Mounting KVM/QEMU virtual disk

Create a new restore task for individual item(s) you want to restore.

  1. From the SEP sesam GUI menu bar, select Activities -> Restore. The New Restore Task window opens.
  2. Select what you want to restore. You can search savesets by task name or by filename or path.
    • When searching by task name, use the drop-down list of available tasks and select the one you want to restore from. This option is selected by default.
    • If you are searching by filename/path, select the option Filename or path in a saveset and enter your search expression in the search pattern field.
  3. Under the Saved in period drop-down lists, specify the time frame for which you want to conduct the search. Click Next.
  4. The search results are displayed. From the list of savesets matching your query, select the version from which you want to restore an individual file. Then select the check box Mount virtual disk(s). You can mount any saveset stored to default data store Path, to Si3 deduplication store or to HPE StoreOnce. Mounting is not possible if the savesets are stored to tapes or if the data is compressed or encrypted. Note that some other restrictions apply.
  5. KVM SFR select task Beefalo V2.jpg
  6. Mount is triggered and your virtual disk is mounted to the device server. This may take a few seconds. Click OK.
    KVM SFR mount Beefalo V2.jpg
  7. In the Select Files window, select the folders or files you want to restore, for example, the home directory, and click Next.
  8. KVM SFR select files Beefalo V2.jpg
  9. In the fourth step of the restore wizard (Target Settings), select a restore target where you want to restore your files.
  10. In the final step of the restore wizard, you can review all the settings of your restore task. You can start your single file restore immediately by clicking Start. If you want to save the restore task, click Save.
  11. Click OK to unmount the saveset and close your restore session.
Information sign.png Note
A restore task can be scheduled like any other task. If you want to add a restore task to the schedule, see Scheduling Restore.

Monitoring restore

You can view the status of your restore jobs by selecting Job State -> Restores from the Main Selection. Restore overview provides detailed information on the last run of restore jobs, including the task name, status (successful, error, in queue ...), start and stop time of the last backup, data size, throughput, client and message.

As of 4.4.3 Beefalo V2, you can also monitor the restore progress using the Web UI. For details, see SEP sesam Web UI.
