This is not the latest version of SEP sesam documentation and, as such, does not provide information on features introduced in the latest release. For more information on SEP sesam releases, see SEP sesam Release Versions. For the latest documentation, check Support Matrix.
The support matrix lists all the configurations and versions currently supported by SEP sesam and SEP IT-Save. SEP sesam automatically detects your environment's hardware configuration. Note that SEP sesam only recognizes storage devices known or listed by the operating system, such as OS where the Master Server/Remote Device Server will be installed. For details, see Storage Hardware page.

SEP sesam Backup Servers and Clients
Versions older than 4.4
For each operating system the latest SEP sesam version is listed, thus ensuring that the listed version works with 4.4 SEP sesam Server. For example, a SLES7 running version 3.4 of a SEP sesam Client will be backed up by a SEP sesam Server version 4.4.2. There will be no development for versions prior to 4.4; however the support and bug fixes are still available.
It is recommended to upgrade the SEP sesam server and client components to the latest version during the regular upgrade process (check the list of SEP sesam release versions). This ensures the highest possible protection of the SEP sesam Clients. Customers with a valid license are eligible for a free SEP sesam upgrade for any new release until the end of the license term. Before upgrading your SEP sesam environment, check the support matrix and compatibility.
Note
Tar (.tgz) installation no longer available
Since SEP sesam V4.4 tar files are no longer available. For earlier SEP sesam versions, SEP provides generic tar (.tgz) installation kits of SEP sesam for Linux based on glibc 2.0-2.4 on i386/x86-64. They can be used for almost all Linux distributions, but SEP provides no guarantees of their usability. Support is available on a best effort basis. Attention: No support is offered for tar installations on systems, where native packages are available.
SEP sesam Server 4.2 or lower compatibility issue
SEP sesam GUI version 4.4 does not support downgrading to SEP sesam Server version 4.2 or lower. Installing SEP sesam GUI 4.4 in the environment with a lower SEP sesam Server version causes errors due to incompatibility of SEP sesam GUI version 4.4 with older SEP sesam Server versions. Since there is no GUI backward compatibility and the GUI cannot be downgraded to version 4.2, you should download and install SEP sesam GUI version 4.2 from SEP Download Center to preserve compatibility with SEP sesam 4.2 or lower.
■ Currently supported SEP sesam version. For example, version 4.4 means that all 4.4.x releases are supported.
■ The last supported SEP sesam version for the respective component (e.g., Server).
Notea
The SEP sesam Micro Focus (Novell) OES module is already a part of the SLES 12 packages. It is not required to download and install any separate sesam-novell-client package.
Noteb
OES11 SP2 eDirectory (NetIQ Directory) is supported by SEP sesam since version 4.2.2-40 and with SEP Sesam Novell Client 4.2.2-35. For additional information, see OES11Sp2 eDir.
Notec
Supported up to SLES15 Service Pack 3 (SP3) with the exception of SEP sesam Server - the latter is not supported for SLES15 SP3. KVM backup is also not supported with SP3.
■ Currently supported SEP sesam version. For example, version 4.4 means that all 4.4.x releases are supported.
■ The last supported SEP sesam version for the respective component (e.g., Server).

These architectures may not work out of the box or may need special configuration. Consulting for these is available according to the price list.
As of VMware vSphere 5, backup with SEP sesam is only supported with a licensed ESXi hypervisor. Backup of ESXi 5.5 hypervisors is supported as of SEP sesam version 4.2.2.40.
Noteb

VSS and quiesced snapshots of Windows VMs are only supported in Citrix Hypervisor 8.0 and earlier versions; they have been removed in Citrix Hypervisor ≥ 8.1 and in the version ≥ 9.0.x.x drivers. For more information, see Citrix Hypervisor 8.1 Deprecations and removals.
Noteb
To continue using the quiesced snapshot feature with Windows VMs hosted on Citrix Hypervisor 8.0 and earlier, retain your current 8.2.x.x version of the Windows I/O drivers and do not update to the 9.0.x.x drivers.
Notec
Citrix Hypervisor (XenServer) Changed Block Tracking (CBT) is required for single file restore.
As XCP-ng is based on Citrix Hypervisor that has removed support for VSS and quiesced snapshots in Citrix Hypervisor ≥ 8.1 and in the version ≥ 9.0.x.x drivers, the following applies: To continue using the quiesced snapshot feature with Windows VMs hosted on XCP-ng 8.0 and earlier, retain your current 8.2.x.x version of the Windows I/O drivers and do not update to the 9.0.x.x drivers. For more information, see XCP ng 8.1 Release Notes and Citrix Hypervisor 8.1 Deprecations and removals.
As of v. 4.4.3 Beefalo, the RHV module also supports oVirt-based platforms within Oracle Linux Virtualization Manager (OLVM). For details, see RHV documentation.
With Oracle databases v. ≥ 12c, multitenant architecture is supported to allow for backup and restore of multitenant container databases (CDBs) and pluggable databases (PDBs) in a similar way as for traditional Oracle databases (non-CDBs). For details, see Backing up CDBs and PDBs.
