4 4 3 Beefalo:RHV Configuration
Overview
This article describes requirements and configuration steps for SEP sesam integration with RHV environments. (RHV is a rebranding of Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV).) Note that the procedures introduced in this article are the required configuration steps to set up RHV SEP sesam integration. For details on RHV key features and backup configuration, see RHV Backup.
SEP sesam supports snapshot based backups of virtual machines in Red Hat Virtualization (RHV) environments. SEP sesam Client package is used for installing SEP sesam on RHV Manager and Oracle Linux Virtualization Manager (OLVM). As OLVM is currently installed on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), the SEP sesam configuration and backup procedure are the same for RHV and OLVM.
Prerequisites
- Only Red Hat Enterprise Linux version ≥ 7 (RHEL7 or RHEL8) can be used as a data mover for backups and restores.
- Check the support matrix for the list of supported RHV and OLVM versions.
- SEP sesam Server ≥ v. 4.4.3 Beefalo. Check Hardware requirements for SEP sesam Server or RDS.
- SEP sesam Client with additional components must be installed on a VM running RHEL7/RHEL8 OS inside the RHV environment.
- Working name resolution for RHV nodes and RHV resource (RHV Manager).
- Administrator access to the RHV Manager.
Installing RHV client
In order to use the RHV backup module, you have to install a SEP sesam Client on a virtual machine running RHEL7/RHEL8 OS, as described in Installing RHEL/CentOS-based distributions. Before you install any of the SEP sesam components (e.g., Server, Client or GUI), make sure that you have configured the RPM repository for RHEL-based distributions properly. For details, see RPM Repository.
RHV configuration
After installing SEP sesam Client on RHV, proceed as follows:
- Prepare SEP sesam Server.
- Configure RHV backup client as a data mover.
- Configure RHV Manager as a SEP sesam Client.
Preparing SEP sesam Server
After you have installed SEP sesam Client on RHV, prepare the SEP sesam Server as follows:
- Log in via SSH as a root user, and in the command prompt specify the following command: source /var/opt/sesam/var/ini/sesam2000.profile
- Set the global variable for multi restore: sm_glbv w gv_multi_restore 1
Configuring RHV client as a data mover
Open SEP sesam GUI and add RHV VM with installed SEP sesam Client to SEP sesam environment. This client acts as a data mover for backups.
- From Main Selection -> Components -> Topology, select the relevant location (e.g., RHV) and click New Client. The New Client window opens.
- Enter the client name.
- From the Platform drop-down list, select Linux. By selecting the Platform the Operating system is set automatically. File:RHV data mover client.jpg
- Click OK to add a new client.
Note | |
The RHV VM name for the data mover must be the same as the host name of the SEP sesam Client. |
Configuring RHV Manager as a SEP sesam Client
After configuring RHV client as a data mover, you have to add RHV Manager as a client to SEP sesam environment.
Note | |
It is not mandatory to install a SEP sesam Client on the RHV Manager system. |
- From Main Selection -> Components -> Topology, select the relevant location (e.g., Virtualization/RHV) and click New Client. The New Client window appears.
- Enter the name of the RHV Manager or OLVM.
- From the Platform drop-down list, select Linux. By selecting the Platform the Operating system is set automatically.
- Change the Access Mode from SMSSH to PROXY.
- From VM server type drop-down list, select RHV-Management-Server. After selecting the VM server type, another tab, labeled RHV Access, is shown. File:RHV Manager client.jpg
- Switch to the OS Access tab and enter the credentials as an administrator to access the respective systems. You have to use DOMAIN\USER format for domain accounts or HOST\USER for local accounts.
- Under the RHV Access tab, you have to specify credentials for RHV Manager (user name and password), and select a data mover. Click OK.
