Overview

This article describes requirements and configuration steps for SEP sesam integration with Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV) environments. Note that the procedures introduced in this article are the required configuration steps to set up RHEV SEP sesam integration. For details on RHEV key features and backup configuration, see RHEV Backup.

Prerequisites

  • Only Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server ≥ 7 (≥ RHEL7) can be used as data mover for backups and restores. Check the support matrix for the list of supported RHEL versions.
  • SEP sesam Server ≥ v. 4.4.3.
  • SEP sesam Client with additional components must be installed on a VM running RHEL7/RHEL8 OS inside the RHEV environment.
  • Working name resolution for RHEV nodes and the RHEV resource (RHEV Manager).
  • Access to the RHEV management center as an administrator.
  • Check Hardware requirements for SEP sesam Server or RDS.
Information sign.png Note
It is recommended to upgrade RHEV to the latest version. Older RHEV versions often have problems with snapshot consolidation which might result in broken backups.

RHEV configuration

To be able to back up the RHEV VMs with SEP sesam, proceed as follows:

  1. Download and install SEP sesam Client on RHEV.
  2. Prepare SEP sesam Server.
  3. Configure RHEV backup client as a data mover.
  4. Configure RHEV Manager as a SEP sesam Client.

Preparing SEP sesam Server

After you have installed SEP sesam Client on RHEV, prepare the SEP sesam Server as follows:

  1. Log in via SSH as a root user, and in the command prompt specify the following command:
  2. source /var/opt/sesam/var/ini/sesam2000.profile
  3. Set the global variable for multi restore:
  4. sm_glbv w gv_multi_restore 1

Configuring RHEV client as a data mover

Open SEP sesam GUI and add the RHEV virtual machine with installed SEP sesam Client. This client acts as a data mover for backups.

  1. From Main Selection -> Components -> Topology, select the relevant location (e.g., RHEV) and click New Client. The New Client window opens.
  2. Enter the client name.
  3. Information sign.png Note
The RHEV VM name for the data mover must be the same as the host name of the SEP sesam Client.
  4. From the Platform drop-down list, select Linux. By selecting the Platform the Operating system is set automatically.
  5. Rhev-data-mover 4.4.3.png
  6. Click OK to add a new client.

Configuring RHEV Manager as a SEP sesam Client

After configuring RHEV client as a data mover, you have to add RHEV Manager as a client to SEP sesam environment.

Information sign.png Note
It is not mandatory to install a SEP sesam Client on the RHEV Manager system.
  1. From Main Selection -> Components -> Topology, select the relevant location (e.g., Virtualization/RHEV) and click New Client. The New Client window appears.
  2. Enter the name of the RHEV Manager.
  3. From the Platform drop-down list, select Linux. By selecting the Platform the Operating system is set automatically.
  4. Change the Access Mode from SMSSH to PROXY.
  5. From VM server type drop-down list, select RHEV-Management-Server.
  6. Rhev-m 4.4.3.png
  7. Switch to the OS Access tab and enter the credentials as an administrator to access the respective systems. You have to use DOMAIN\USER format for domain accounts or HOST\USER for local accounts.
  8. Click OK.
