Overview

This article describes how to configure the SEP sesam Server on Linux to back up the NetApp volumes by Network File System (NFS). In order to be able to back up the files from a certain NetApp volume, SEP sesam Server requires full access to this volume.

To set up a NetApp volume backup, you must configure a NetApp client based on an NDMP platform with NetApp operating system. Then both, NFS and NDMP backups can be performed. For Netapp NFS backup, a restore can only be performed to a locally mounted volume or to a regular client with a Linux operating system.

Backup workflow

The backup process involves the following:

1. SEP sesam logs onto the NetApp system and creates a snapshot of the volume.
2. The snapshot is mounted locally on its file system.
3. The data on the volume is backed up and the volume is dismounted.
4. SEP sesam removes the snapshot from the NetApp system.

Prerequisites

• SEP sesam Server v. ≥ 4.4.3 Beefalo. Check Hardware requirements for SEP sesam Server, RDS and SEP sesam Client.
• SEP sesam data mover for NetApp on Linux. For details, see SEP sesam Data Mover.
• The NetApp system must be reachable over its http://www.netapp.com/us/products/management-software/ Web API.
• Remote management must be possible over the NetApp FilerView.
Note: If your NetApp system is not reachable by FilerView, you cannot browse the volumes over SEP sesam. This module works only for NFS shares. For details, see NetApp Volume Backup troubleshooting.
• The backup server must have proper rights to mount the volumes to be backed up locally.
• Required are user name and password of the NetApp system.

Supported ONTAP versions

• SEP sesam Server ≥ 4.4.3 Beefalo: ≥ ONTAP 8.x (7-Mode and clustered data) and ≥ ONTAP 9.x
• SEP sesam Server 4.4.3.64 Grolar: ONTAP 7.x.x–8.2.x (7-Mode and clustered data)
• SEP sesam Server 4.4.2.x–4.4.3.64: ONTAP 7.x.x–8.2.x (7-Mode only)

Configuring NetApp as a SEP sesam Client

You have to configure a client to add it to the SEP sesam environment.

1. From the Main Selection -> Components -> Topology, select the desired location to which you want to add the NetApp client and then click New Client. Enter the name of the client – this has to be the network hostname of the computer. The name has to be resolvable either by DNS or hosts file. If there is a name server (DNS) in the network, SEP sesam automatically selects the TCP/IP address. Otherwise you have to enter it manually in the etc/hosts file.
2. From the Platform drop-down list, NDMP. The NetApp operating system and PROXY communication method are set by default as soon as the NDMP platform is selected.


3. Then switch to the NDMP Access tab to configure access and select a data mover. Under the NDMP Access, set the Account and Password for your NetApp system. From the Data mover drop-down list, select your SEP sesam Server.


4. Once all the options are set, click OK.

Configuring NetApp volume backup

After configuring the client, create a new backup task for it.

	Note
	A backup task can only back up one volume at a time. If you want to back up multiple volumes, you have to create one task per volume and then group the tasks using a task group.

1. In the Main Selection -> Tasks -> By Clients, select the NetApp client and then click New Backup Task. The New Backup Task window appears.
2. Specify the Source. Enter the path or browse for it. In the latter case, the task type and task name are set automatically.


3. Optionally, click the corresponding tabs in the New Backup Task window to define additional options. Then click OK to create the task.
4. If you want to start your newly created task immediately, right-click the name of the task and click Immediate Start. If you want to create a periodic backup, you have to create a schedule for your backup task: Click New Schedule under Main Selection -> Scheduling -> Schedules and set up a schedule. 	Tip
	You can add your backup task to an existing schedule by double-clicking the backup task, selecting the tab Schedules and adding it to one or more schedules.

5. Once you have configured a schedule, you must create a new backup event for it. For details, see Creating a Backup Event.

Monitoring backup

You can view the status of your backup jobs in the SEP sesam GUI -> Main Selection -> Last Backup State. The backup status overview provides detailed information on the last run of backup jobs, including the task name, start and stop time of the last backup, backup level, data size, throughput, assigned media pool, etc.
