Overview

SEP sesam provides data encryption types on different levels: backup-task encryption defined on the backup task level, Si3 encryption for Si3 deduplication store defined on the data store level, and hardware-based LTO encryption for LTO tape drives (generation 4 and higher), which is defined on a media pool level.

If you want to encrypt your backups in SEP sesam on task level, configure the data encryption when creating a backup task. Supported encryption algorithms are the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 256-bit encryption and the Blowfish encryption. The following encryption matrix shows supported encryption types according to the operating system and task type.

In some cases SEP sesam integrates other system's native backup tool, such as RMAN – a complete backup and recovery system for Oracle – where SEP sesam acts as the media management utility and triggers the backup, but it is the system's backup utility that actually drives the database backups. In such cases, where the backups are done externally by some other utility, SEP sesam built-in encryption on the backup task level is not possible. It is replaced by external encyption, done outside SEP sesam. Thus SEP sesam built-in encryption and external encryption are mutually exclusive encryption methods and only one of them is supported.
