5 1 0:Filr Backup

From SEPsesam

Welcome to the latest SEP sesam documentation version 5.1.0 Apollon. For previous documentation version(s), check documentation archive.

Overview

The Novell corporate brand has been acquired by Micro Focus. The Novell Filr product name is now Micro Focus Filr; however, SEP sesam documentation update (such as names and screenshots) to reflect these changes is being done in a phased manner, therefore Micro Focus Filr may still appear under the name Novell Filr. Micro Focus Filr is an enterprise file management tool that provides file access to corporate files (including files that are located on mapped drives), allows sharing files internally or externally, and enables collaboration by commenting on the files. You can easily access and share files and folders from your desktop, web browser, or mobile device.

Filr components (software, MySQL database and search index) can be used either as a single appliance (single VM) for small installations or as multiple appliances for larger installations. Filr appliances run as virtual machines within a VMware, Hyper-V or Xen environment. The MySQL database is used to store MySQL data files, including tablespace data files, tablespace log files, and binary log files. It is also used to store comments on files and folders. It can be configured as a separate appliance, or you can use an existing MySQL database.

System requirements

Step-by-step overview

  1. Install the Filr appliance.
  2. Add the Filr appliance as a client to SEP sesam environment.
  3. Create more backup tasks for the Filr environment in the SEP sesam GUI.
  4. Configure the Personal Storage backup.

Installing the Filr appliance

Once the above prerequisites are met, install the Filr appliance as follows:

  1. Connect to the Filr administration console and turn on the SSH service. (The SSH service can be turned off once Filr is successfully installed and configured.)

  2. Download the SEP sesam backup Client for the target server platform (e.g., SLES11 x64) from SEP download Center.
  3. Copy it to the Filr appliance using a program such as WinSCP, as shown in the screenshot.

  4. Install the SEP sesam Client by specifying the following command:
  5. rpm -Uvh <client>

    In our example:

     rpm -Uvh sesam_cli-4.2.1-41.sles11.x86_64.rpm

  6. Allow the connection from the SEP sesam Server to the Filr appliance by using the command:
  7. /opt/sesam/bin/sesam/sm_setup set_client <SEP_sesam_Server_host_name>

In our example, the hostname of the SEP sesam backup Server is augenblix.sep.de.

  8. Adjust the firewall of the Filr appliance:
    1. Connect to the Filr command line and type in YaST: Security and Users -> Firewall -> Custom Rules.

    2. Use the tab key to select the Internal or External Zone and press F3 (Add) to add it.

    3. Enter the IP address of the backup server and press F3 (Add).
    4. Check the name resolution between the SEP sesam Server and the Filr appliance. For detailed information, see How to check DNS configuration, FAQ:How to verify that the SEP sesam Server has full access to a specific client and List of Ports Used by SEP sesam.
    5. Note
You can also perform this step later, when adding the Filr appliance as a SEP sesam Client in the GUI.
  9. To be able to perform a MySQL backup, configure the /etc/my.cnf at the Filr appliance; see SEP sesam Extension for MySQL.

Configuring Filr appliance in the SEP sesam GUI

Once the Filr appliance is installed, add it as a client in the GUI and then create the required backup tasks for the Filr environment.

Adding Filr client to SEP sesam environment

  1. In the Main selection -> Components -> Clients, select the desired location (e.g., Novell) and then click New Client. The New Client window opens.
  2. Enter the host name of the Filr appliance (only host names are supported).
  3. From the Platform drop-down list, select the Linux platform. When selecting the Linux platform, the Linux operating system and SMSSH access mode are set automatically.
  4. In case of a firewall, switch to the tab Options and under the STPD options set the correct communication port range for transferring data from backup client to the SEP sesam Server. Click OK.

Note
If not checked in the previous installation step, check the name resolution between the SEP sesam Server and the Filr appliance.

For detailed information, see Configuring Clients.

Configuring backup

Use the SEP sesam GUI to create the required backup tasks for the Filr environment. For general details, see Creating a Backup Task.

From the Main Selection -> Tasks -> By Client -> right-click the Filr (host) client, and select New Backup Task. Note that the procedure for creating a backup task differs depending on the task type, so make sure you follow the relevant task type-related procedure.

To protect your Filr appliance, create the following tasks:

  • One backup task for the complete file system (Path task type), as described in Standard Backup Procedure.

  • Single task for each MySQL database (MySQL task type); in our example, we create four different tasks for information_schema, filr, mysql and test. Make sure that you create a separate task for each available MySQL database. For details on MySQL backup, see MySQL documentation.

  • (The target VMware or Hyper-V hypervisor must already be added to SEP sesam environment.) Backup task(s) for the Filr appliance VMs (VMware or Hyper-V task type). For details, see VMware or Hyper-V documentation, respectively. VMware backup task example

Configuring the personal storage backup

To back up all personal storage folders (of all users), proceed as follows:

  1. In the Filr Administration Console, add a new user for backup (backup account).
  2. Prepare the Windows caching server.
  3. In the SEP sesam GUI, create a backup task for the shared directory.

Adding a new user for the backup

Add a new user that will be used for backup. Note that all users must share their personal storage folders with the backup user.

  1. Go to the Filr website and log in as administrator (Admin).
  2. Open the Administration Console and in the Manage Users window, add a new user account with a backup-related name; in our example we use the backupaccount.

  3. Every user on the caching server must manually share all personal storage folders with the newly created backup user (in our case, backupaccount).
  4. The example shows how to share all folders with the user backupaccount.
    Note
To improve the overview of personal storage for every user on the caching server, it is recommended that each user provides the main folder with the name of personal shortcut.

For example, if 5 users create the folder Photos and every user shares this folder with the user backupaccount, 5 folders with the name Photos are visible on the caching server. So every user should create the folder with more specific names, i.e., CR-Photos, Mike-Bayne-Photos, etc., to ensure the restore admin to search and find the appropriate folder easily.

Preparing the Windows caching server

  1. Make sure that the latest SEP sesam Windows Client is installed on the Windows caching server and added to SEP sesam environment. If your SEP sesam backup Server is a Windows system, use it as a caching server and skip this step.
  2. Install the latest Filr client as shown in the screenshot.

  3. Log in with the previously created backup account that will be used to receive the shared files and directories.
  4. Synchronize the Filr folders to your computer.

  5. Select a directory or partition with enough space to save all directories and files from all replicated shares.

  6. Note
Make sure that the Filr client updates the shares at least every 30 minutes.

Configuring backup of the shared directory

To back up the shared directory, create a special backup task for it.

  1. From the Main Selection -> Tasks -> By Clients -> right-click the Filr client (Windows caching server), and select New Backup Task.
  2. In the New Backup Task window, select the complete shared directory as a backup source, in our example, C:/Users/Administrator/Flir. Note that if browsing for the source, the Path task type and task name are set automatically.
  3. link
  4. Then set up a backup schedule (specify when you want to back up your data), and link a backup event to it – in this step you will select the backup level, i.e., FULL, DIFF, INC or COPY. For step-by-step procedure, see Standard Backup Procedure.
