5 2 0:About SEP sesam Clients

From SEPsesam

Welcome to the latest SEP sesam documentation version 5.2.0 Artemis. For previous documentation version(s), check documentation archive.

Overview

In SEP sesam, a client is any computer or system within a network that has the SEP sesam Client software installed and is integrated in the SEP sesam environment. These clients are included in backup schedules and plans to ensure their data is protected. Clients can range from individual workstations or PCs to larger systems like file servers, virtual machines, and databases. These clients are the source of data that is backed up and restored in case of failure or data loss.

SEP sesam Client performs the following tasks:

  • Backup execution: When the SEP sesam Server initiates a backup job, the client generates savesets, which are collections of data backed-up as configured on the SEP sesam Server.
  • Data transmission: Clients send the savesets to the SEP sesam Server or a Remote Device Server (RDS), ensuring that all data is saved to the storage target.
  • Restore operations: When a restore is needed, the client receives stored data from the RDS.

Sesam Backup Client (SBC)

SEP sesam Client is managed by the SBC (Sesam Backup Client). SBC is the software component responsible for performing backup, migration, and restore tasks on client systems. SBC delivers the prepared data to the Sesam Transfer Protocol Server (STPD), which manages the flow of data between the SEP sesam Server and clients.

Agents that are installed on the client communicate with the operating system, filesystem, and applications to execute backup operations. These agents collect data from the client system and deliver it to the SEP sesam infrastructure.

For virtual machine backups, SEP sesam uses a specialized SBC module called SBC_PROXY. This module connects to hypervisors such as VMware or Hyper-V and interacts with their respective APIs to manage storage snapshots or virtual machine data, enabling SEP sesam to protect virtualized environments.

Managing SEP sesam Clients

In SEP sesam, clients are logically grouped in locations. Every client belongs to a location, which can represent and organize clients based on certain properties such as operating system, data type, physical location or any other category.

For more information, see Managing Locations.

Grouping clients makes it easier to manage backups, updates, and permissions across a large organization. Administrators can update or manage multiple clients within a location in one action, such as updating all clients in a location at once, rather than handling each client individually.

For more information, see Managing Clients.

Client status icons

In the user interface, clients are presented with icons that indicate their current status. These icons provide a quick and visual clue to assess the client's state and can prompt users to take appropriate actions when necessary. The table below contains each available icon and its corresponding description.

Web UI icons

The colors of the icons indicate status. A red icon represents a warning (e.g., a disabled backup execution), while a green icon indicates an OK status (e.g., an accessible system). The table below displays only neutral-colored icons, in the WebUI, they are color-coded according to their status.

Icon Description
SEP sesam Server
Backup execution is disabled on the server.
SEP sesam RDS
Backup execution is disabled on the RDS.
SEP sesam loader/drive
SEP sesam Client
Backup execution is disabled on the client.
Virtual machine (VM), with or without the SEP sesam client package installed.
Backup execution is disabled on the virtual machine.
Backup execution is disabled on the system.
The system is accessible on the network.
The system is not accessible on the network.

GUI icons

Icon Description
The backup execution is disabled on the client.
The client is not accessible.
The system checks if the update is available for the client.
An update is available for the client (may be any of the following: a new SEP sesam package, a service pack or in case of a SEP sesam Server, a UI server update).
The update of the client failed due to an error during installation. Details are available in the GUI Clients view in columns Update status and Update message.
The backup execution is disabled on the server.
The server is not accessible.
The backup execution is disabled on the RDS.
The RDS is not accessible.
