Setting up a connected loader

This article is outdated and, as such, does not provide information on features introduced in SEP sesam ≥ 4.4.3 and described in Configuring Loaders and Drives.

If the loader isn't detected automatically or if it is connected after a finished installation it has to be set up manually.

The following document explains the course of action for this step by step.

Setting up a loader in a Windows system

Device manager

The according loaders and drive devices have to be displayed correctly. The following screenshot shows the "loader" device and the display of the "drive" devices:

It is important for tape-drives to have a "Tape Symbolic Name"!

Detecting the devices via SEP sesam slu

In order to check if the devices are used correctly by SEP sesam first you have to call the necessary tools that investigate if connected devices are detected.

This is done via the SEP sesam tool "slu". This tool has to be executed after executing the SEP sesam profile (<SESAM_INSTALL_DIR>/var/ini/sm_prof.bat).

This tool provides information about the loaders and tape drives that are connected to the system.

The following screenshot shows the output of a system with a connected HP loader with 2 tape drives:

The device names are important here:

* Changer0 : The loader device that's used to control the loader
* Tape0 : the first tape drive in the loader
* Tape1 : th second tape drive in the loader


In the next step you can check how many slots the loader has:

In this example the loader has a total of 19 slots (0 - 19) as well as a "port" slot which isn't configured in SEP sesam.

In the next step the loader has to be set up in the SEP sesam GUI.

Setting up a new loader

First you need to create a new loader by clicking "New Loader" in the menu "Components -> Loader". The information that was collected in the previous steps is needed here:

* The device names (Changer0 , Tape0, Tape1)
* the number of slots! (20, 19 + Port slot)

The followoing screenshot shows the installed loader:

The fields are entered like this:

  • Name: arbitrary, name of the loader
  • Gerät (SCSI-ID): name of the loader device (Changer0)
  • Device Server: the interface of the backup server (in this example hagakure2)
  • Typ: LTO 1
  • CTRL: is set with DIR_SLU
  • Fächer: 20 (the port can be left open, 19 slots are sufficient)
  • Barcode: if the loader as a barcode reader this option has to be activated!
  • Automatic unloading: has to remain being set to "no"!
Creating the according drives

Now the drives that belong to the loader have to be created. This is done by clicking "New drive" in the menu "Topology -> Drives".

In our example the loader has two drves. The following screenshot shows a fully set up drive:

Important fields:

  • Drive number: is assigned automatically (continuous number)
  • Name: arbitrary
  • Loader: here loader "1" has to be selected. Loader "0" is the virtual loader.
  • Drive type: is assigned automatically to the according loader type (LTO)
  • Device Server: is also set by SEP sesam!
  • Drive group: here the selected drive group is set. Ideally all drives tha belong to a loader are located in the same drive group!
  • Drive number in the loader: the correct drive number has to be entered here (Tape0 = 0 , Tape1 = 1 , Tape2 = 2 etc. these are the continuous numbers for connected drive devices that are assigned internally in the loader).
  • Gerät: the according Tape Symbolic Name of the drive (see device manager).

Adding the tapes

Now a new media pool has to be created which is then assigned to the according drive group that contains the drives. The drives are added by archive adjustment.
