5 1 0:Restore Assistant

From SEPsesam

Welcome to the latest SEP sesam documentation version 5.1.0 Apollon. For previous documentation version(s), check documentation archive.

For restoring your data SEP sesam offers Restore Assistant, the web-based restore interface that is intuitive and offers many advanced options that enable you to tailor the restore to your needs. With Restore Assistant you can create a restore task, configure regular or specialized restore types, and recover data from a wide range of sources, including filesystems, database applications, groupware systems, virtual environments, and operating systems.

For experienced users, the Restore Assistant offers the flexibility to switch between simple and advanced restore modes, enabling to fine-tune their restore process.

Simple and advanced web restore

The Restore Assistant offers both simple and advanced online restore features. The availability of these features depends on your version and user permissions, as well as the selected UI mode. The operations and options accessible after login may vary based on user type. For more information, see User Roles and Permissions.

Restore of virtual environments

For virtual environments, Restore Assistant provides a straightforward and adaptable single file restore (SFR) option for nearly all hypervisors, provided you have the necessary permissions. More details on SFR can be found in the Web Single File Restore for Virtual Machines.

In addition, the VMware sandbox restore feature enhances functionality and usability of the recovery options, employing use of run and execution commands of the VMware guest tools.

Restore to dump file

You have the option to restore backups to dump files. This restores the data to a single file rather than its original location.

Restore of encrypted backups

You can perform an online restore of data from password-protected encrypted backups. If the password used for encryption is stored in the SEP sesam database, it is automatically applied for decryption during the restore process. However, if the password is not stored in the database, you will be prompted to enter it during the online restore. If you don't have the password, restoring an encrypted backup is not possible, and it remains locked.

Accessing Restore Assistant

To access the Restore Assistant:

  • Through the GUI: either click the Restore Assistant icon in the toolbar, or click Activities -> Restore Assistant in the menu bar.
  • Through the SEP sesam Web UI: either click the Restore Assistant icon in the toolbar at the top of the page, or in the main menu click Assistants and then Start the Restore Assistant.
  • Using the browser: enter the following address in your web browser: http://[sesamserver]:11401/sep/ui/restore/.

Access to the Restore Assistant and data restoration can be restricted to authenticated users with the appropriate permissions. These permissions are based on the SEP sesam User Types. For details, see User Roles and Permissions.

  • If you cannot access the web Restore Assistant, check if you have received the appropriate permissions for online restore.
  • The operations and options available after logging in may differ depending on the user type. Other Web UI display restrictions may depend on the custom roles with specific permissions and the UI mode.

For details, see About Authentication and Authorization and User Roles and Permissions.

Setting UI mode

You can switch from simple to advanced restore mode to refine the restore with additional options. Simple mode is enabled by default, providing the recommended approach for common restore tasks. Advanced restore mode offers additional options and is recommended for experienced users.

To switch to advanced restore mode, enable the Advanced View option in the lower left corner of the Start window.

In the upper menu you can change the display language (German or English). The Monitoring, Web UI, Help and Account icons (in the upper right corner) allow you to quickly check the status of all restore jobs (in Monitoring -> Restores), access the SEP sesam Web UI and online help, and log in and out via Restore Assistant.
