Step 6: Schedules

The SEP sesam SEPuler is the event calendar scheduler - it is really the heart of the software. Everything that occurs with SEP sesam is registered and logged within the SEPuler. An event is a task set by the SysAdm to occur at a specific time. It consists of a description of the event to take place; a start time; a priority selection (0-9); as well as its recurrence, i.e. every minute, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, annually.

In GUI->Scheduling->Schedules a default schedule was established during installation. SysAdm can edit, adjust or update the scheduler at any time. SEP NEWDAY, the day change mechanism within the scheduler, has been pre-set to 8:30 a.m. of the following day. ( NEWDAY-event ). This means that all backups from the prior day will either be completed or terminated by 8:30 a.m. Again, 8:30 is the arbitrary starting time for the next day's business activities - the SysAdm user can change this.

The SEPuler determines the frequency or the recurrence of backup tasks to be performed by SEP sesam. The initial installation sets this event to 'Daily'.

At this point the SysAdm must verify that an initialized medium is available for sesam to perform a backup operation. This is done via GUI->Activities->Immediate Start->Media Action .

At the beginning of the next backup event the SEPuler will carry out the instructions as entered in the backup task established earlier. The bottom display window will show messages regarding the requests for a media. This may be automated via the autoloader or it may generate a request for tape in the event a single drive is used.
