Strategy

The IT department and SysAdm should decide on a backup strategy. How many computers will be secured or backed up? How many gigabytes of data will be needed today, in six months, in two years? Where are the computers? When will the computers be backed up? How long will data be stored? How will the data be stored, hard disk, raid array, single tape, tape library? Where will tape media or external disks be stored? Fireproof vault, off-site? What is the budget allowed by the organization to secure business critical data?

This information should be gathered and then the hard data discussed below should be assembled for easy and seamless configuration and maintenance of the daily production and backup cycle.

Once the initial strategy is decided upon. (This should be a flexible plan, especially if this is the first time the company has implemented a backup strategy.) Data gathering can now begin for the real information to implement the plan. After the strategy has determined which computers should be backed up by SEP sesam the names, IP addresses and access to these systems is required.

In GUI->Components->Topology->New Location, freely selected location names and their descriptions are inserted since each server or client must be related to a specific location. Location LOCAL is entered as the default.

Within the location, a new client is configured in GUI:Components->Topology->New Client. According to the operating system of that computer, either Windows, UNIX, VMS or NetWare platform is selected.

The client name which will be backed up (target client) is inserted into the GUI associated with the name of respective server within the network performing the backup tasks. The backup data may reside on the, server (typical); on the client (Remote Device) either on second disk drive or tape; or the data may be sent over a LAN or WAN to a Storage Area Network. If there is a name server (DNS) in the network, Sesam automatically selects the TCP/IP address. Otherwise it must be entered in the etc/hosts file.

For Operating System insert O/S installed on that computer.

If the client has several network cards, their TCP/IP names can be entered in Interfaces .

During configuration an attempt to contact the remote computer is executed (Sesam software must be installed on the target client).

Setup of the Secure Shell (SSH)-Client

To use ssh for client access mode, you must configure automatic login from Sesam server to the client by using the public key.
