Overview

This article provides information about a Kopano restore using GUI.
The SEP sesam online module for Kopano (formerly Zarafa) provides hot backup and restore of Kopano groupware servers. This includes backup and restore of single user mails, mailboxes and public folders.

Restore interfaces

  • There are two ways to restore your Kopano mail(s) in SEP sesam: using the GUI restore wizard (described here) or (as of 5.0.0 Jaglion) via the web interface Restore Assistant, if you have been granted the appropriate permissions.
  • You can only use the GUI to schedule a restore task (Scheduling -> New -> New Restore Event or Scheduling -> right-click schedule or event -> New Restore Event). For details, see Scheduling Restore.

This article provides information about a Kopano restore using GUI. For details on restoring via a web interface, see Restore Assistant.

In the GUI, the restore is triggered from the Menu bar -> Activities -> Restore. The restore wizard guides you through the process of restoring your data. For general step-by-step procedure, see Standard Restore Procedure.

Prerequisites

  • Ensure that you have sufficient restore permissions and access rights.
  • Ensure that there is enough free space on the target system to which you are restoring your data.

Configuring Kopano restore

SEP sesam supports the restore of single items (such as e-mails and contacts from the backup) as well as the full mailbox restore.

When restoring individual mails, the only option you can select in the last step of the restore wizard is Auto recover after restore. If selected, SEP sesam will import the mail(s) into the original mailbox. Otherwise, the exported mail data and index files will be restored into the file system to <SESAMVAR>/work/kopano and can be imported manually with the regular Kopano command (kopano-backup).

If you prefer to watch a video, you can learn all the steps in Backup and restore of Kopano with SEP sesam.

Steps

Before you begin, ensure that the prerequisites are met. This example shows the procedure for restoring a single mail into the original folder. The procedure differs slightly depending on whether you are restoring a single mail or a regular mailbox. In the latter case, the complete mailbox is selected instead of an individual mail (refer to steps 4 and 5).

  1. From the SEP sesam GUI menu bar, select Activities -> Restore. The New Restore Task window opens.
  2. Select what you want to restore. You can search savesets by task name or by filename or path.
  3. Under the Saved in period drop-down lists, specify the time frame for which you want to conduct the search. Click Next.
  4. Kopano restore filter Tigon Beefalo V2.jpg
  5. The search results are displayed. From the list of savesets matching your query, click the version you want to restore. Click Next.
  6. Information sign.png Note
If you want to perform a complete mailbox restore, select Complete restore of selected task and set additional restore options in the final step of the wizard. For details, see Standard Restore Procedure.

  11. In the final step of the restore wizard (Summary window), you can review all the settings of your restore task. You can start the restore immediately or save the restore task as a template for future use.

A restore task can be scheduled like any other task. If you want to add a restore task to the schedule, see Scheduling Restore.

Restoring single items via mount

Note that this section provides information about a Kopano restore via the GUI. For details on restoring via a web interface, see Restore Assistant.

Information sign.png Note
The Mount saveset option is available only in advanced UI mode (formerly expert GUI mode). To use the mount option, make sure your UI mode is set to advanced, as described in Selecting UI mode.
  • Before starting a restore, check the restrictions that apply to mounting.
  • Make sure that the UI mode is set to advanced.
The currently active mode is displayed at the top of the SEP sesam application window.

Create a new restore task for individual item(s) you want to restore.

  1. From the SEP sesam GUI menu bar, select Activities -> Restore. The New Restore Task window opens.
  2. Select what you want to restore. You can search savesets by task name or by filename or path.
    • When searching by task name, use the drop-down list of available tasks and select the one you want to restore from. This option is selected by default.
    • If you are searching by filename/path, select the option Filename or path in a saveset and enter your search expression in the search pattern field.
  3. Under the Saved in period drop-down lists, specify the time frame for which you want to conduct the search. Click Next.
  4. The search results are displayed. From the list of savesets matching your query, select the version from which you want to restore an individual file. Then select the check box Mount saveset under Single file restore via Mount. You can mount any saveset stored to default data store Path, to Si3 deduplication store or to HPE StoreOnce. Mounting is not possible if the savesets are stored to tapes or if the data is compressed or encrypted.
  5. Kopano SFR mount.jpg
The selected saveset is mounted to the SEP sesam home directory var\tmp\mnt. Click OK.
  6. In the Select Files window, select the single mails you want to restore and click Next.
  7. In the next step of the restore wizard (Target Settings), select a restore target where you want to restore your files.
  8. In the final step of the restore wizard, you can review all the settings of your restore task. You can start your single item restore immediately by clicking Start. If you want to save the restore task, click Save.
  9. Click OK to unmount the saveset and close your restore session.
Information sign.png Note
A restore task can be scheduled like any other task. If you want to add a restore task to the schedule, see Scheduling Restore.

Monitoring restore

You can monitor the restore progress using the Web UI (Monitoring -> Restores) or view the status in the GUI (Main Selection -> Job State -> Restores). Restore overview provides detailed information on the last run of restore jobs, including the task name, status (successful, error, in queue ...), start and stop time of the last backup, data size, throughput, client and message.
